SGA and Garland County Farm Bureau Hosted State and Local Candidate Forum

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Student Government Association and the Garland County Farm Bureau (GCFB) hosted a State and Local Candidate Forum Tuesday. Dick Antoine, host of the KZNG-AM 1340 morning show, “Talk of the Town” moderated the event. SGA President, Roger Powell welcomed the crowd. GCFB Vice President and legislative chairman, Ralph Pinkerton expressed his appreciation for the partnership with NPC. He said, “We feel that by combining efforts we are able to create a more successful event.”

National Park College Continues Focus on Transfer Initiatives

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Board of Trustees held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, February 24. Items for report included a new degree program, enrollment updates, and an overview of ongoing transfer initiatives. The February Student of the Month was introduced by Practical Nursing (PN) Program Director, Tamara Abernathy. PN student, Laikin Davis graduated from Benton High School in 2011. Laikin is the first in her family to graduate from college. She entered the Practical Nursing Program in July 2015 and is a candidate for May graduation with her Certificate in Practical Nursing. She is enrolled in 17 credit hours and maintains an overall GPA of 3.6 while working 27 hours a week. Laikin lives in Arkadelphia, drives 76 miles a day and has not missed one day of class. She hopes to work as an LPN and wants to work with children. She plans to apply for the LPN to RN track to complete her Associate of Science in Nursing degree.

Aerospace Fabrication and Repair Program Hosts Open House

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Aerospace Fabrication and Repair (AFAB) program will host an open house March 1 at 2 p.m. in the Aerospace lab located in the Technical Sciences building. The Greater Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce Ambassador’s Club will be in attendance for a ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. The new for-credit AFAB program was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor which provided funding for equipment, supplies and instruction. The program gives students the skills necessary for a variety of jobs in the growing Aerospace industry, such as sheet metal mechanic, assembly mechanic, brake press operator, composite technician, quality assurance inspector and manufacturing planner. Students graduate with entry level knowledge and skills in the production and repair of metallic and composite aerospace structures, the ability to interpret technical drawings, understand aerospace production systems and the soft skills necessary for employment. College Exploration Day

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) will host College Exploration Day Wednesday, February 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the atrium of the Frederick M. Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences. College Exploration Day is an opportunity for students to visit with representatives from colleges and universities all over the region, explore transfer options, and gather information about academic programs, admission requirements and student life.

National Park College Announces Fall Dean's List and President's List

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Office of Student Affairs released the Dean’s List and President’s list for the Fall 2015 semester. 185 students were named to the Dean’s List and 223 students were named to the President’s List. Students on the Dean’s List must maintain a minimum of a 3.25 semester GPA and a 3.25 cumulative GPA. Students on the President’s List must maintain a minimum of a 3.6 semester GPA and a 3.6 cumulative GPA.

Open House for Industrial Tech Program

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Industrial Technology Program will host an open house February 16 at 2 p.m. in the new Industrial Technology lab located in the Ish Stivers building at National Park College. The Greater Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce Ambassador’s Club will be in attendance for a ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. NPC is located in a growing manufacturing hub, producing a diversity of products from rubber bands and bottle caps to industrial cables and lumber equipment. The College strives to meet the needs of local business and industry through workforce development and academic programs that prepare a workforce with the skills to be competitive in today’s workplace. Using a federal Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College Career Training (TAACCCT) grant, the College created the Industrial Technology program which is specifically tailored to help close the skills gaps of local manufacturing employers. NPC collaborated with Berry Plastics, industry champion and grant partner, to create a scheduling and sequencing to accommodate employees’ work schedules and provide targeted services to ensure success.

All state and local candidates seeking public office have been invited to participate. Dick Antoine, host of the KZNG-AM 1340 morning show, “Talk of the Town” will moderate the event. SGA President, Roger Powell, said, “Part of the mission of the Student Government Association is to promote student interest in citizenship issues. This event will allow our students, as well as the community, an opportunity to meet the candidates and ask the questions that are important to them as voters. Facilitating this event gives us the opportunity to not only serve our student body but the community as a whole.”

NPC Student and Retired Faculty Member Honored at AHA Banquet

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) student, Katherine Olis was honored with the Student of the Year award at the Garland County Chapter of the Arkansas Hospitality Association (AHA) Banquet January 27, 2016 at the Arlington Hotel. Retired NPC Hospitality program director, Karla Nardi was also honored as Educator of the Year. Katherine Olis is from Naples, Florida. She has been in the hospitality industry for 15 years. She became interested in pursuing a career in Hospitality during her work as a server for Cracker Barrel Country Stores. Over the past 10 years, she has expanded her experience while working at Turf Catering and Oaklawn Racing and Gaming. Currently a shift lead at Cracker Barrel, her drive and skills led her to apply for the Red Shirt Training Team, a program where employees recognized as leaders travel the country training others. Olis’ goal is to become a general manager of a Cracker Barrel store. She has worked long hours to meet her academic goals. Certified in multiple national exams, she has maintained a 4.0 GPA and will graduate with an Associate of Science in Hospitality and Tourism with honors in May.

NPC Director of Financial Aid Elected to NASFAA Board

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Director of Financial Aid, Lisa Hopper was recently elected to the National Association of Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) Board. She will serve a two-year term that will begin July 1, 2016. She faced opponent, Jack Edwards, Director of Financial Aid for Stanford University Graduate School of Business for the position of Representative-At-Large. She believes her experience and advocacy efforts for community colleges ultimately helped her earn the votes she needed.

NPC Hosts Freedom Film Festival for Human Trafficking Taskforce

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) will host a Freedom Film Festival with the Human Trafficking Taskforce of Garland County on February 9, 2016. Four films are scheduled to play throughout the day beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Computer Resource Auditorium (CR200). NPC Behavioral Intervention Specialist, Susan Millerd, MSW said, “Human trafficking is an important issue facing our community. It is happening right here where we live and putting our youth at risk. We want to do our part to help educate the community about ways we can help combat this horrible crime.”

NPC Hospitality and Tourism Students Compete in Chocolate Festival

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Hospitality and Tourism students competed in the Cooperative Christian Ministries and Clinic (CCMC) 12th Annual Chocolate Festival on Sunday. The festival was a project for the Restaurant and Event Management Class. The Garland County Chapter of the Arkansas Hospitality Association assisted with funding for the supplies. Instructor, Eve Baum Victory said the class spent last semester recipe testing and finally decided to submit Maple Bacon Walnut Fudge. Students created 800 pieces of fudge to serve for the event and made a pan without nuts for visitors with allergies. The class created a rustic lumberjack theme for the booth and dressed in flannel, jeans and work boots. The bark backdrop and wood tiered servers complimented the hearty dessert.

NPC Welcomes Dr. Jerry Thomas as VP Student Affairs

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Board of Trustees held their annual meeting and regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 27, 2016. Items for report included new hires, new degree programs, an update on the Foundation’s year-end report, and an overview of recent and upcoming campus events. During the annual meeting, the Board elected new officers, appointed standing committees and adopted the calendar for the year. Gene Parker was appointed Chairman, Ray Donathan was appointed Vice Chairman and Gail Ezelle was appointed Secretary/Treasurer.
