NPTC Students Attend SkillsUSA Conference

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park Technology Center (NPTC) students recently competed in the SkillsUSA National Championships and Leadership Conference. Six students and two advisors attended the weeklong conference held in Louisville, Kentucky, June 20 – 24. Over 16,000 students, teachers and advisors representing all 50 states and US territories were present during the competitions. High school students representing the Criminal Justice and Advertising and Graphic Design programs competed in their respective contests as the Arkansas State SkillsUSA Champions.

NPTC Students Attend HOSA International Leadership Conference

Hot Springs, Arkansas – Eight National Park Technology Center (NPTC) Health Science Technology Education (HSTE) students attended the 39th Annual Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) International Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, June 22-26. Students qualified for the conference by competing and winning their event at the state conference in March. Approximately 10,500 students attended the national conference. HOSA affiliations are in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico, Mexico, American Samoa, Canada and the District of Columbia. Students were accompanied by Susan Kelly and HOSA advisor/HSTE instructor, Relda Steelman.

SGA Hosts Final Exam Slam

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Student Government Association hosted the second annual Final Exam Slam: Staff versus Students basketball game April 29. 3 Point Contest StudentLast year the students beat the faculty and staff 75-30 in a grueling 40-minute battle. This year the faculty and staff team won 53-46 with help from student tutor, Matt Lim and student Pierre Adair. Division Chair, Chris Coble coached the faculty and staff team and SGA President, Roger Powell coached the student team. Intramurals coordinator, Bob Kissire and Dean of Enrollment Services, Jason Hudnell officiated.

Hospitality and Tourism Students Compete in Cheap Chopped Championship

May 9, 2016

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Hospitality and Tourism program hosted a Cheap Chopped Championship for students in the Food Prep II class. Three teams competed using mystery ingredients for an entrée and a dessert. Students were required to utilize the culinary and presentation techniques they learned over the fall and spring semesters. The contest is similar to the television show. The cooking was timed and students had access to a pantry of ingredients. The entrée mystery ingredients included untrimmed chicken breast, organic carrots and limes. The dessert mystery ingredients included strawberries, balsamic vinegar and $2 to buy anything from the student center vending machine. Students prepared Hawaiian chicken kabobs with honey glazed carrots, teriyaki pineapple kabobs, chicken vegetable stir-fry with mango pineapple puree, glazed lemon cookies with strawberry coulis and cinnamon sautéed mango cream tarts.

Hospitality and Tourism Students Open Flavor (501) Cafe

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Hospitality and Tourism program opened the Flavor (501) Café April 7 and April 21. The project is part of the Restaurant and Events Management Class and is the group’s largest fundraiser of the year. It provides students with hands-on management of a food and beverage operation along with all facets of an event including decorations, music, raffle and silent auction items, marketing, budgeting and more. The NPC Hospitality program takes students through a rigorous program that includes travel and tourism, hotel operations, food and beverage management, food prep skills, and event management training. In the spring semester, students experience hands-on training when planning and executing the opening of the student café. This year, students decided to embrace the newest trends in food and beverage management and change the name and “feel” of the student café from “The Alternative Café” to “Flavor (501) Café.” There is an increasing interest in the local food movement, popularity of organics, and the overall need for more focus on healthy cooking and nutrient retention in preparation. The name reflects their desire to deliver incredible food with interesting flavor profiles while promoting local producers.

Hospitality and Tourism Students Host International Cuisine Day

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Hospitality and Tourism program hosted an International Cuisine reception yesterday. Students were tasked with creating a dish from their assigned country and served it to guests. Participants and their assignments included: Madison Louden – Italy – Tiramisu; Jamie Durfee – Iran – Pomegrate Walnut Stew; Ana Alegria – Greece – Fasaloda; Katherine Olis – Indonesia – Chicken Satay; Bobbie Sebren – Sweden – Swedish Meatballs; Kelly Barnes – Ireland – Cheesy Potatoes; Carl Seaman – US – Burgers; Kimberly Sampson – Belgium – Waffles.

Marine Students Complete Local Internships

The Marine Technology internship program is in full swing and marine students are working at various marine shops in Arkansas, including Orr Marine, Robert Hughes Marine, S&G Xtreme Marine, Copher’s Marine and Venom Motorsports. Eight students are participating in the internship program and are receiving on the job training in the marine industry. Students are interning as technicians, riggers, supervisors, parts managers and sales assistants.

Cub Scouts Visit NPC

March 30, 2016

Cub Scouts from Pack 318 visited the campus of National Park College to learn more about science. They visited with Dr. Griffin, adjunct chemistry teacher, to learn what scientists do. The scouts, ages 8-10, came prepared with three questions each and were led in a guided experiment. They made observations about vinegar and baking soda experiments with hot vinegar, cold vinegar, and room temperature vinegar. Based on what evidence shows a chemical reaction and the kinetic theory of chemical reactions, they discussed why their observations might have occurred.

Hotel Operations Class Visits Mountain Harbor Resort

March 16, 2016

The Hotel Operations class visited Mountain Harbor Resort in February. The focus of the visit was housekeeping, how it is integral to hotel operations, guest impression and overall reputation of a lodging operation. Lodge manager, Pati Brown and her housekeeping staff greeted the students in the main lodge with warm cookies, coffee and water, and information packets on Mountain Harbor’s property. Owner, Bill Barnes spoke to the group about being born with a drive to serve, and explained that he appreciates each and every one of his employees. Gina Coffey, Head of Housekeeping, had each of her employees introduce themselves and share what they liked best about their job. Almost every employee said they enjoyed meeting people from all different parts of the world and walks of life.
