The NPC Student Government Association participated in the two-year college SGA Day at the Capitol Feb. 14. Students toured the Capitol grounds, attended committee meetings, visited with legislators, and attended the legislators luncheon hosted by Arkansas Community Colleges.
The Health Science Technology Education (HSTE) program at National Park Technical Center (NPTC) participated in a college simulation day event last week.
NPC’s Alpha Beta Psi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) tapped students for invitation into the honors society last week. More than 250 students were invited to join the organization. PTK is the international honor society of two-year colleges. A student must have completed 12 or more semester hours of coursework at NPC and must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher to be invited for membership. In order to remain a member in good standing, a student must maintain a cumulative 3.25 GPA or higher. PTK allows students to develop skills in leadership, scholarship, fellowship, and service. Dr. Ferris Allen, Choral Instructor was invited to Harding University last week as a guest lecturer. He spent the day offering five individual voice lessons and one public masterclass.
Three students at National Park College enrolled in JavaScript course, CIS-2083 JavaScript Programming, this fall, passed their Certified Internet Web (CIW) JavaScript Specialist certification exam on December 12, 2016. According to instructor, Robert Feighl, the students worked hard all semester preparing for this exam and the certification exam was given as their final exam for the course. The students are: Kimari Watson, Charles Akins, and Devin Dunbar. In addition, Kimari Watson also passed the CIW Advanced HTML5 and CSS3 certification exam earlier in the semester.
National Park College alumna Brenda Bahena recently visited with NPC accounting students regarding the benefits of student membership to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Brenda became a student member of the AICPA while a student at NPC through which she was awarded a scholarship. Brenda impressed upon the students all of the resources available including scholarship opportunities, discounts on CPA exam review programs, interview tips, and free CPA preparation tools.
The DeGray Chapter of the Arkansas Society of Certified Public Accountants held their student dinner on November 15 at Comfort Suites in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The dinner provides students with networking opportunities with local Certified Public Accountants as well as book scholarships. Seven National Park College students were awarded book scholarships totaling $610. Yamaha Service Advisor, Richard Sivils and Marine Technology Instructor, Delmar Hunter pictured with a motor donated by Yamaha last month. Yamaha donated the motor, 2 powerheads and propellers to the NPC Marine Program.
The Respiratory Therapy students along with the faculty (Program Director Paul Lowe, DCE Holly Dean, and Dr. Chuck Burke) attended the annual Arkansas Society for Respiratory Care state meeting held at the Hot Springs Hotel and Spa and Convention Center, September 28-September 30. The meeting covers state of the art principles for providing care to patients with cardiac and respiratory disease. During the awards ceremony Respiratory Therapy students (left to right) Katie Powell and Lauren Stewart were each given the Arkansas Society for Respiratory Care Scholarship Awards.
