Rebekah Robinette has received Quality Matters (QM) recognition

Rebekah Robinette has received Quality Matters (QM) recognition for her online BIOL 2244, Microbiology, course. Rebekah has the distinction of being one of only two faculty member to ever receive QM recognition at NPC. This accomplishment shows Rebekah has spent a lot of time and thought in developing a strong course. Quality Matters focuses on course design—making sure learning objectives, assessments and measures, and instructional materials are all in alignment while designing an interactive/engaging course for students using the appropriate technology. Achieving recognition means she has accomplished this and students can take her course with confidence that the stated learning objectives will be taught. Congratulations, Rebekah

Lt. Governor Keynote at Million Women Mentors Event

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) will host a Million Women Mentors event Wednesday, August 24 at 10 a.m. in the Eisele Auditorium of the Frederick M. Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences at National Park College. Lt. Governor, Tim Griffin will give a keynote address about the importance of mentoring. The event is free and open to the public. Million Women Mentors is a nationwide movement to support the engagement of 1 million STEM mentors, both male and female, to mentor girls from school age to work age and help encourage them to persist and succeed in STEM programs and careers by the year 2019. Walmart is partnering with STEMConnector® and Lt. Governor, Tim Griffin, to launch the initiative in Arkansas.

Diamond Lakes Defenders Announce Scholarship Award

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) criminal justice student, Keanna Peck has been selected to receive the Diamond Lakes Defender First Response scholarship this year. Peck is entering her second year in the criminal justice program at NPC. She is passionate about pursuing a career in law and hopes to use her skills to help troubled youth though juvenile court. She has worked as an intern for the Garland County Juvenile Court, and recently completed a summer internship with Congressman Bruce Westerman in Washington, D.C. The $500 award was presented to Peck Tuesday by members of the Diamond Lakes Defender Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Paul Calcagno, president, Harold Woody, treasurer, and Mike and Linda Roberts, members. The Defenders Motorcycle Club began in 2004 and includes chapters all over the United States. Members are active and retired law enforcement, military, emergency services and public safety personnel.

NPC Hosts Young Manufacturers Academy

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) hosted a Young Manufacturers Academy (YMA) last week. This was the second annual event for YMA which included 25 students in sixth through eighth grade. The weeklong academy was full of activities that introduced students to numerous career opportunities in the field of manufacturing. Highlights of the week will included a robotics activity at the Mid-America Science Museum, a Lean Manufacturing Event hosted by the Arkansas Manufacturing Solutions Group, a visit from the Be Pro Be Proud mobile unit, industry tours to Alliance Rubber and AirTech Supply, and a field trip to the Arkansas School for Math, Sciences and the Arts (ASMSA). Student teams presented about their experiences to their families and friends Friday.

Campus Closed for Staff Development

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) will be closed Monday, August 15 until 11:00 a.m. for faculty and staff professional development workshops. Offices will resume normal business hours Tuesday, August 16. Registration is open now. Classes begin August 17.

NPC President Supports Changes to Higher Ed Funding Formula

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) President, Dr. John Hogan supports the Arkansas Division of Higher Education (ADHE) proposal to amend the higher education funding formula to an outcomes based model. Governor Asa Hutchinson announced his support for the plan. The Governor’s office released a statement Thursday announcing details about pending changes to the higher education funding formula. The ADHE Coordinating Board met Friday and approved the Higher Education Productivity Funding Model, which includes placing an increased emphasis on completion of a degree rather than a sole focus on increasing enrollment.

Congressman Westerman Hosts Town Hall at NPC

Hot Springs, Arkansas – Congressman Bruce Westerman hosted a public town hall meeting Thursday following National Park College’s Adult Education Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy (W.A.G.E.™) advisory committee meeting. Business and community leaders met before the town hall to discuss updates about the W.A.G.E.™ program and recognized new W.A.G.E.™ partners, Representative Mickey Gates with The Stonebridge Collection, the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, and Safe Haven Women’s Shelter. Students from Shalom Women’s Shelter were recognized for earning W.A.G.E.™ certificates, including Audrey Gibson, Angel Race and Charis Smith.

Congressman Westerman to Speak At W.A.G.E.™ Meeting

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College’s Adult Education Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy (W.A.G.E.™) program has invited Congressman Bruce Westerman to be a special guest speaker at the advisory committee meeting Thursday, July 28 at 12:15 p.m. in the Martin Eisele Auditorium in the Fredrick M. Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences. The event is open to the public. Congressman Westerman plans to discuss policy issues related to poverty, economic growth and opportunity, and health care.

Les Warren Elected Foundation Chair

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Foundation hosted their quarterly board meeting Thursday in the Southside Student Center. Les Warren presided over his first meeting as the newly elected Foundation Board Chair. Warren was elected to the seat in April, following past Chair Raymond Wright. Foundation Vice Chair, Dennis Smith and Secretary/Treasurer, Bill Creason were also elected in April. Other members of the Foundation Board include Franklin Bass, Laryssa Blunt, Mike Bush, Caroline Campbell, Sally Carder, Brenda Cox, Denise Davis, Ted Ericson, Ann Hair, John Hogan, Bob Megahan, Don Munro, Lance Porter, Senator Bill Sample, Bryan Smith, Gary Troutman, and Representative John Vines. Warren expressed his appreciation to past Chair Raymond Wright for his vision and leadership. He presented Wright with a commemorative gavel.
