NPC ART STUDENT FEATURED AT RIVER VALLEY ARTS CENTER

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) art student Carol Sheets has been invited to exhibit her work at the River Valley Arts Center during the month of December. An opening reception will be held December 4 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Artist Carol SheetsSheets won “Best of Show” during the Collegiate Art Competition earlier this year for her portrait, “Best Friends,” which featured her granddaughter Micah and her dog, Piper.

Sheets earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and Master of Science in Education from Henderson State University. She spent 31 years teaching secondary and elementary education in the Garland County area. Upon retirement, she enrolled at NPC to pursue an interest in the subject of art.

Her first year was spent studying pastels with Instructor Thad Flenniken. She attended the International Pastel Convention and completed workshops with renowned oil and pastel artist William Schneider and portrait artist Lisa Ober. She spent her second year at NPC studying with Joseph Lauer, who encouraged her to pursue oil painting. This year she is learning from instructors Lana Taliaferro and portrait artist Ovita Goolsby. Goolsby was selected to paint the official portrait for Governor Mike Beebe, which now hangs in Governor’s Conference Room at the Arkansas State Capitol.

Art instructor Lana Taliaferro said, “Carol had never received any formal art instruction before enrolling at the College, yet in three short years she managed to refine her skills to produce exceptional and award winning portraits. Her eye for detail is impressive, but I most admire her positive and uplifting spirit. She is a joy to have in class.”

Sheets attributes her accomplishments to the quality art faculty she studies under at NPC. “I credit all of my instructors. I feel very fortunate. You can’t walk in anywhere and get that kind of training,” she said. “I hope to remind everyone that it is never too late to try something new.”

Sheets and her husband, Danny, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. They reside in Mount Ida, Arkansas.
