Nursing Division Hosts Spring Blood Drive

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Nursing Division hosted its spring blood drive last week. Students, staff and faculty donated 95 units of life-saving blood that could help as many as 285 patients in our area hospitals. Last year in March the spring blood drive gave 83 units of blood. Nursing Division faculty and students volunteered to help with the registration table and keep the process moving quickly for donors. Others helped provide snacks for donors after they gave blood.

NPC Film Group Begins Production

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Film Group began production Saturday for their upcoming film The Photographer . Principal photography will begin this Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Liberal Arts building and will include a number of haute couture gowns on loan for the day from Chuck Dodson, who is also playing Bernard Goldman, the fashion agent in the film. The film is about a modern photographer, Johnathan Jenkins played by Steve Helms, who buys an ancient camera that seems to have a presence of its own, pictured left. Other cast members include Joe, his assistant, played by Rahem White, Bernard Goldman, his agent, Anna Karinova, Vogue model, played by Brandi Searcy, Jacob Webb, antique dealer, played by Mason Tabor, and a variety of background actors and day players.

Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Garland County Hosts Awards Reception

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Garland County will host a reception Thursday, March 10 at 5 p.m. for students who have been awarded a scholarship for the 2016 spring semester. The program will be held in the Southside Student Center at National Park College. Recipients and their families have been invited to attend. Dr. John Hogan will present opening remarks and several students will share their stories. 17 students have been approved by the board to receive the $750 scholarship award, totaling $12,750. Five of the students are first time recipients and all are full time students. 15 of the recipients attend National Park College and two attend Henderson State University.

Oaklawn Foundation Awards Scholarship to Nursing Student

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) nursing student, Dulce Olivia Diaz was awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the Oaklawn Foundation for the spring semester. Diaz is 22 years old and the oldest of five children. She immigrated to the United States with her single mother as a small child. She is proud to be a first generation college student. Though her mother only completed a sixth grade education, she motivated Diaz to achieve her college degree. It is important to her that she set an example for her younger siblings and honor the sacrifices her mother made so she could pursue her dreams. Diaz has worked extremely hard to be successful in school while maintaining a full-time job to help with expenses. Once she began nursing school, the workload was too much and she had to reduce her work to part-time.

UAMS, UALR Visit Classes During College Exploration Day for Transfer Students

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) students visited with representatives from The University of Arkansas Medical Sciences (UAMS) and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) last week as part of College Exploration Day activities. NPC hosted College Exploration Day last Wednesday in the atrium of the Frederick M. Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences. Tina Paxton, LMSW Field Trainer for Mid-South and Stephanie Christian-Carpenter, Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Field Coordinator, LCSW, AADC, both from the UALR Social Work program visited with students in Samantha Christian’s General Psychology class. They explained what social work entails and common misconceptions about the field. They let students know about internship opportunities, how to prepare and the Associate of Arts transfer agreement that allows students to enter the UALR Social Work program as a junior. Christian-Carpenter graduated from NPC and transferred to the UALR BSW program before she was employed with UALR. The guests also shared information about the online Master of Social Work program and Bachelor of Social Work program.

Marine Technology Program Partners with Mercury, Indmar

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Marine Technology program recently partnered with Indmar Marine, Mercury Marine and BPR Evinrude to expand student access to training materials and equipment. The companies have provided NPC with student access to entry level technician training and testing materials for use in the program’s curriculum. Both Mercury Marine and BPR Evinrude have also agreed to allow the College to purchase equipment and supplies at dealer cost and provide access to all online service manuals and service bulletins. The agreements are provided at no cost to the College. They will allow students a better understanding of each company's network and an opportunity to reach the initial level of certification required for factory training, creating better job opportunities.

NPC Hosts CRACKED, NOT BROKEN Suicide Prevention Conference

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) will host the Cracked, Not Broken Suicide Prevention Conference with The Garland County Suicide Prevention Coalition, the United Way of Garland County and the Arkansas Department of Health on March 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Frederick M. Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences. The Garland County Suicide Prevention Coalition organized this event in an effort to help lower Garland County’s high rate of suicides. Garland County was rated the third highest in the state for suicides in 2014. Susie Reece, Chair of the Garland County Suicide Prevention Coalition said, “Garland County has one of the highest suicide rates in the state and we know the non-approach that’s been used in the past is not addressing this growing concern. Our community is determined to lower our suicide rates by directly engaging and educating the people this problem affects. And the hard truth is, this problem affects us all.”

SGA and Garland County Farm Bureau Hosted State and Local Candidate Forum

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Student Government Association and the Garland County Farm Bureau (GCFB) hosted a State and Local Candidate Forum Tuesday. Dick Antoine, host of the KZNG-AM 1340 morning show, “Talk of the Town” moderated the event. SGA President, Roger Powell welcomed the crowd. GCFB Vice President and legislative chairman, Ralph Pinkerton expressed his appreciation for the partnership with NPC. He said, “We feel that by combining efforts we are able to create a more successful event.”

National Park College Continues Focus on Transfer Initiatives

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Board of Trustees held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, February 24. Items for report included a new degree program, enrollment updates, and an overview of ongoing transfer initiatives. The February Student of the Month was introduced by Practical Nursing (PN) Program Director, Tamara Abernathy. PN student, Laikin Davis graduated from Benton High School in 2011. Laikin is the first in her family to graduate from college. She entered the Practical Nursing Program in July 2015 and is a candidate for May graduation with her Certificate in Practical Nursing. She is enrolled in 17 credit hours and maintains an overall GPA of 3.6 while working 27 hours a week. Laikin lives in Arkadelphia, drives 76 miles a day and has not missed one day of class. She hopes to work as an LPN and wants to work with children. She plans to apply for the LPN to RN track to complete her Associate of Science in Nursing degree.

Aerospace Fabrication and Repair Program Hosts Open House

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Aerospace Fabrication and Repair (AFAB) program will host an open house March 1 at 2 p.m. in the Aerospace lab located in the Technical Sciences building. The Greater Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce Ambassador’s Club will be in attendance for a ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. The new for-credit AFAB program was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor which provided funding for equipment, supplies and instruction. The program gives students the skills necessary for a variety of jobs in the growing Aerospace industry, such as sheet metal mechanic, assembly mechanic, brake press operator, composite technician, quality assurance inspector and manufacturing planner. Students graduate with entry level knowledge and skills in the production and repair of metallic and composite aerospace structures, the ability to interpret technical drawings, understand aerospace production systems and the soft skills necessary for employment.
