ADVISORS SERVE AT HOBY CONFERENCE
Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) advisors attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership conference last weekend at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Arkansas. Advisors Chelsea Lairamore, Nathan Looper, Josh Ramirez, a nd Stephanie Rizzo helped facilitate the event as part of the south Arkansas region.
The HOBY curriculum emphasizes personal, group, and societal leadership. Dean of Enrollment, Jason Hudnell presented a session on group leadership at the conference. Students participated in discussion and activities related to leadership, service, and making a difference intended to introduce them to the idea of leadership for social change. The event included personality assessments, hands-on group projects, a global community perspectives exercise, and ended with Leadership in Action projects. HOBY participants dedicated over 150 hours of service to local libraries and the Boys and Girls Club in Magnolia, Arkansas.
In addition to HOBY's State Leadership Seminars for high school sophomores, a local Community Leadership Workshop has been held annually at NPC since 2010. The one-day leadership experience introduces high school freshmen to the idea that leaders serve other people and attract followers by the strength of their ideas. Since its inception in 2007, the Greater Hot Springs Area Community Leadership Workshop has empowered local students to complete almost 4,000 hours of volunteer service.
"The partnership between National Park College and Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership has allowed us to impact the lives of over 200 young people right here in Hot Springs,” said Rizzo. She added, “HOBY produces leaders who are ready to find solutions to community problems and take the initiative to put their ideas into action."
