Hospitality and Tourism students in Eve Baum’s Food Prep class presented their homemade soup projects this week. Many students made stock from scratch and homemade breads to accompany their dishes.
Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College’s (NPC) honors society, Alpha Beta Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), hosted People, Pictures, Prostheses: The Possibilities Tuesday evening. The event was part of an annual Honors in Action project. This chapter's goal is to bring community awareness to the evolution of these engineered, life-enhancing products. PTK President, Howard Cheresnick said, “The project is intended to raise awareness of prostheses and how they have evolved over the years, as well as how they have changed people's lives in our community.”
Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College will be closed Wednesday, November 23 through Saturday, November 26 for the Thanksgiving holiday. No classes will be held Monday, November 21 through Saturday, November 26. Campus will resume regular hours on Monday, November 28. Registration for spring semester is now open. Classes begin Wednesday, January 11.
Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) choral ensemble, the NPC Singers, will host a fall concert at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Tuesday, December 6, at 7 p.m. The choir will perform "A Wealth of Common Song" and the program will feature folk music from Scotland, Ireland, England and Canada. Local flutist Shelley Martin will be featured on an arrangement of the Irish ballad "Carrickfergus" for choir and flute. Pianist Lowella Cherry will accompany the choir.
Hot Springs, AR – National Park College (NPC) announced that it earned the 2017 Military Friendly® School designation during the Annual Veteran’s Day Celebration. Hot Springs High School NJROTC provided the presentation of the colors for the event. NPC veteran student, James Clark, retired from the U.S. Marine Corps sang the National Anthem. The NPC Student Government Association provided coffee and donuts for attendees. Rick Martin and Gene Rasuer represented the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10483 in Hot Springs Village. Guest speaker, Lt. Colonel Joel Lynch addressed the crowd.
Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Office of Student Affairs released the Dean’s List and President’s list for the Summer 2016 semester. Thirty-eight students were named to the Dean’s List and twenty-nine students were named to the President’s List. Students on the Dean’s List must maintain a minimum of a 3.25 semester GPA and a 3.25 cumulative GPA. Students on the President’s List must maintain a minimum of a 3.6 semester GPA and a 3.6 cumulative GPA.
Hot Springs, Arkansas – Students in Dr. George Maxey’s Geology class participated in a field trip in October. The class discovered graptolite fossils in the Womble formation west of Checkerboard Point on Lake Ouachita. Maxey explained that the graptolites were preserved as a carbon imprint at the bottom of the Tethys Sea, which no longer exists. “Plate tectonics closed the ancient sea and scraped the sediments off the bottom of the sea floor and folded the sediments up and onto what is present day Arkansas - forming the Ouachita Mountains. The upper folds eroded away leaving the roots of the mountains that are exposed at present,” said Maxey.

The Respiratory Therapy students along with the faculty (Program Director Paul Lowe, DCE Holly Dean, and Dr. Chuck Burke) attended the annual Arkansas Society for Respiratory Care state meeting held at the Hot Springs Hotel and Spa and Convention Center, September 28-September 30. The meeting covers state of the art principles for providing care to patients with cardiac and respiratory disease. Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Community and Corporate Training Division offered its first Active Shooter Training class in October. More than 35 employees from Baxley/LogPro participated in the training. Workforce Specialist Barry Ballard said the training is in high demand and has been crafted by an expert in the field. Travis K. Sorrows, President and co-founder of Corporate Resilience Solutions (CRS) facilitated the course. He is retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after 25 years as a Special Agent in various cities across the country. Sorrows served as one of the FBI’s experts in crisis intervention and personnel risk management, providing services at critical incidents such as the Columbine school massacre and the Pentagon after September 11, 2001. “There isn’t a better expert around,” Ballard said.
