Habitat for Humanity volunteers

NPTC Engineering Students Visit Habitat House

October 3, 2016

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park Technology Center (NPTC) Pre-engineering students visited a Habitat for Humanity jobsite last week so students could learn how houses are constructed. The Civil Engineering and Architecture class is working on a project that requires each student to design a house which meets the Habitat for Humanity criteria using industry standard architectural design software. The students will perform mock interactions with clients and criteria will be refined based on the client’s hypothetical needs.

Choir Scholarship Auditions

Every semester, over $10,000 in scholarships are awarded to singers in NPC's two choirs: National Park Singers and the Soundwaves. Auditions for scholarships and admission to the ensembles will be held Friday, August 26, from 11:30-12:30 and from 1:00-3:00 PM in CR 100. To make an audition appointment, e-mail Dr. Ferris Allen, ferris.allen@np.edu. National Park Singers rehearses Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00-12:20. Soundwaves rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00-12:20.

Kelly Pickett Attends Teaching with Technology Symposium

Kelly Pickett, Life Science Instructor for the Math/Science Division attended the 10th Annual Teaching with Technology Symposium July 21-22, 2016 at UAMS. This state-wide symposium is offered to educators, administrators, librarians, instructional and curriculum designers, and others using technology in higher education. “This symposium was a great opportunity to see how other colleges are implementing innovative technology in order to engage students,” stated Kelly Pickett. “I look forward to incorporating what I learned about team based learning, collaboration, and instructional technology to my online and traditional classes at National Park College.” Kelly teaches online Anatomy and Physiology courses at National Park College and is currently working on Quality Matters certification for her courses.

Rebekah Robinette has received Quality Matters (QM) recognition

August 16, 2016

Rebekah Robinette has received Quality Matters (QM) recognition for her online BIOL 2244, Microbiology, course. Rebekah has the distinction of being one of only two faculty member to ever receive QM recognition at NPC. This accomplishment shows Rebekah has spent a lot of time and thought in developing a strong course. Quality Matters focuses on course design—making sure learning objectives, assessments and measures, and instructional materials are all in alignment while designing an interactive/engaging course for students using the appropriate technology. NPTC Students Attend SkillsUSA Conference

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park Technology Center (NPTC) students recently competed in the SkillsUSA National Championships and Leadership Conference. Six students and two advisors attended the weeklong conference held in Louisville, Kentucky, June 20 – 24. Over 16,000 students, teachers and advisors representing all 50 states and US territories were present during the competitions. High school students representing the Criminal Justice and Advertising and Graphic Design programs competed in their respective contests as the Arkansas State SkillsUSA Champions.

NPTC Students Attend HOSA International Leadership Conference

July 5, 2016

Hot Springs, Arkansas – Eight National Park Technology Center (NPTC) Health Science Technology Education (HSTE) students attended the 39th Annual Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) International Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, June 22-26. Students qualified for the conference by competing and winning their event at the state conference in March. Approximately 10,500 students attended the national conference. HOSA affiliations are in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico, Mexico, American Samoa, Canada and the District of Columbia. Students were accompanied by Susan Kelly and HOSA advisor/HSTE instructor, Relda Steelman.

Cub Scouts Visit NPC

March 30, 2016

Cub Scouts from Pack 318 visited the campus of National Park College to learn more about science. They visited with Dr. Griffin, adjunct chemistry teacher, to learn what scientists do. The scouts, ages 8-10, came prepared with three questions each and were led in a guided experiment. They made observations about vinegar and baking soda experiments with hot vinegar, cold vinegar, and room temperature vinegar. Based on what evidence shows a chemical reaction and the kinetic theory of chemical reactions, they discussed why their observations might have occurred.
