The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawk softball team (3-3) dropped its home double
header against Paris Junior College Tuesday, falling to the Dragons, 6-1, in the opener
and 10-2 in the finale.
In game one, the Dragons took a three-run lead in the top of the first inning and
never looked back, spoiling NPC’s home opener. After Paris Junior College padded its
lead, 4-1, with a run in the second inning, sophomore right fielder Aubree Goodnight
(Benton) scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the inning, plating the Nighthawks’
lone run of the game. Held in check by tough Paris pitching, National Park College
mustered just two hits throughout the remainder of the contest, resulting in defeat.
Sophomore pitcher Cameron Person (Bonham, Texas) surrendered six runs on 10 hits over
five innings with one strikeout in the start for NPC. Freshman pitcher Gracie Fowler
(Texarkana) fired two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one walk. Goodnight and
sophomore shortstop Logan Nies (Rockwall, Texas) led NPC at the plate, finishing with
two hits apiece in the loss.
In the nightcap, a strong start at the plate fueled a 6-0 Dragons lead through two
and one-half innings. NPC chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the third inning,
plating two runs on RBI singles from Goodnight and sophomore third baseman Gracie
Redmon (Benton). Despite putting multiple baserunners on throughout the contest, the
Nighthawks struggled to keep the Dragons off the scoreboard, as NPC fell in five innings.
In the circle, freshman hurler Bailee Cowell (Clarksville) gave up six runs on eight
hits over three and one-third innings. Sophomore left fielder Reagan White (Carrollton,
Texas) finished two-for-three at the plate, while Goodnight and Redmon finished one-for-three
with an RBI apiece in the loss.
NPC plays host to Connors State College in a double header at Majestic Park Saturday,
February 10 at 1 and 3 p.m. The games will be streamed live on the Nighthawk Network.
