NPC Reveals Top Ten Mascot Selections

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) announced the top 10 mascot selections Friday. The top 10 mascot concepts were selected from more than 160 submissions. The mascot selection team included representatives from faculty, staff, students and the community. The team looked for concepts that reflected NPC's brand personality, considered the culture and history of both the college and community, could be easily represented in print, online and in college materials, and were accompanied by a name and costume idea. Nearly 50 percent of the total submissions were from students, 23 percent from faculty and staff, 15 percent from community members, and the remainder from alumni and other categories.

NPC Announces 3 Percent Growth in College Enrollment

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) announced official fall enrollment Thursday. Enrollment for degree-seeking college students is up 3.01 percent this fall over last year. Last year the College reported 2,153 degree seeking students. This year they currently have 2,218 college students, an increase of 65 students. Preliminary numbers show that full-time equivalent (FTE) for college students is up approximately 9.5 percent, from 1,626 last year to 1,797 currently. Dr. Jerry Thomas, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services said, “We are excited to see that more college students are taking more hours and decreasing time to degree. Our students recognize the value NPC offers through lower tuition, expanded transfer options, and a traditional college experience closer to home.”

Items for report included updates on student life events, student government association projects, and workforce training. The Board welcomed new hires Donald Caudill, Higher Ed Program Manager; Kathy Edwards, Institutional Services Assistant; Kurtis Markish, Purchasing Specialist; Bruce Hankins, Controller; Ferris Allen, Music Instructor; Dr. Judith Bride, Chemistry Instructor; Kevin Day, High School Criminal Justice Instructor; Timothy Jackson, EMT Clinical Director; Ashley Simmons, Practical Nursing Instructor; Lana Taliaferro, Art Instructor; and Dr. Christopher Thrasher, History Instructor.

Choir Scholarship Auditions

Every semester, over $10,000 in scholarships are awarded to singers in NPC's two choirs: National Park Singers and the Soundwaves. Auditions for scholarships and admission to the ensembles will be held Friday, August 26, from 11:30-12:30 and from 1:00-3:00 PM in CR 100. To make an audition appointment, e-mail Dr. Ferris Allen, ferris.allen@np.edu. National Park Singers rehearses Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00-12:20. Soundwaves rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00-12:20.

Kelly Pickett Attends Teaching with Technology Symposium

Kelly Pickett, Life Science Instructor for the Math/Science Division attended the 10th Annual Teaching with Technology Symposium July 21-22, 2016 at UAMS. This state-wide symposium is offered to educators, administrators, librarians, instructional and curriculum designers, and others using technology in higher education. “This symposium was a great opportunity to see how other colleges are implementing innovative technology in order to engage students,” stated Kelly Pickett. “I look forward to incorporating what I learned about team based learning, collaboration, and instructional technology to my online and traditional classes at National Park College.” Kelly teaches online Anatomy and Physiology courses at National Park College and is currently working on Quality Matters certification for her courses.

Hotel Hot Springs Invests In Employee Training

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Community and Corporate Training Division is partnering with The Hotel Hot Springs to offer employee training in customer service, ethics and leadership. Since its grand opening in April 2016, NPC has hosted six separate classes for The Hotel Hot Springs. The staff completed a Leadership Series which included a Stepping Up to Supervisor class for new leaders, a team building workshop, and a time management class to help spur productivity. They also completed classes in successful negotiations and CPR certification. Workforce Specialist, Barry Ballard said, ““We are very excited to be a training partner with the new Hotel Hot Springs and provide leadership and hospitality professional development. It is clear they are working very hard to move to the next level and want to provide their staff with the tools to reach that goal.”

Rebekah Robinette has received Quality Matters (QM) recognition

Rebekah Robinette has received Quality Matters (QM) recognition for her online BIOL 2244, Microbiology, course. Rebekah has the distinction of being one of only two faculty member to ever receive QM recognition at NPC. This accomplishment shows Rebekah has spent a lot of time and thought in developing a strong course. Quality Matters focuses on course design—making sure learning objectives, assessments and measures, and instructional materials are all in alignment while designing an interactive/engaging course for students using the appropriate technology. Lt. Governor Keynote at Million Women Mentors Event

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) will host a Million Women Mentors event Wednesday, August 24 at 10 a.m. in the Eisele Auditorium of the Frederick M. Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences at National Park College. Lt. Governor, Tim Griffin will give a keynote address about the importance of mentoring. The event is free and open to the public. Million Women Mentors is a nationwide movement to support the engagement of 1 million STEM mentors, both male and female, to mentor girls from school age to work age and help encourage them to persist and succeed in STEM programs and careers by the year 2019. Walmart is partnering with STEMConnector® and Lt. Governor, Tim Griffin, to launch the initiative in Arkansas.

Diamond Lakes Defenders Announce Scholarship Award

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) criminal justice student, Keanna Peck has been selected to receive the Diamond Lakes Defender First Response scholarship this year. Peck is entering her second year in the criminal justice program at NPC. She is passionate about pursuing a career in law and hopes to use her skills to help troubled youth though juvenile court. She has worked as an intern for the Garland County Juvenile Court, and recently completed a summer internship with Congressman Bruce Westerman in Washington, D.C. The $500 award was presented to Peck Tuesday by members of the Diamond Lakes Defender Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Paul Calcagno, president, Harold Woody, treasurer, and Mike and Linda Roberts, members. The Defenders Motorcycle Club began in 2004 and includes chapters all over the United States. Members are active and retired law enforcement, military, emergency services and public safety personnel.
