Program Overview

Health Information Technology (HIT) prepares the student to perform tasks related to the use, analysis, presentation, abstracting, coding, storage, and retrieval of healthcare data in manual and electronic form. Graduates are eligible to take a national certification exam to become a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Program Goals

  • Produce competent health information management professionals at the Associate degree level in accordance with the American Health Information Management Association’s entry-level competencies.
  • Create HIM professionals who demonstrate critical thinking skills in the use and management of healthcare data.
  • Instill use of confidentiality, as well as security and compliance measures to protect health information.
  • Exhibit respect for ethnic, gender, and cultural differences in the classroom and workplace settings.
  • Demonstrate responsiveness to the needs of the communities of interest.

The Health Information Management accreditor of National Park College is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for the Associate degree in Health Information Management has been reaffirmed through 2029.

Health Information Technology (A.A.S.) 63 Semester Credit Hours

A health information technician performs a variety of functions including: organizing, analyzing and technically evaluating health information; compiling various administrative and health statistics; and coding diseases, operations, procedures and other therapies. They also maintain and use a variety of health information indexes, special registries and storage and retrieval systems; input and retrieve computerized health data; and control the use and release of health information. Graduates are eligible to take a national certification examination to become a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Admission Requirements

The application process for the Health Information Technology Program is selective. The deadline for program application is April 15, however, late applications are considered until the class is full. A student who applies to the Health Information Technology Program must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Gain college admission. Apply Now
  2. Be in good academic and financial standing.
  3. Complete all prerequisite courses prior to entry into program. A grade of C or better is required in all required classes.
  4. Submit Health Information Technology Program Application by April 15.
  5. Following acceptance in the Health Information Technology Program, students must have a clear background check and drug screen on file through the program approved databank-information will be provided at time of acceptance.

Required Documents

For admission consideration, a student who applies for the Health Information Technology Program must have all of the following documents on file:

  • Completed Health Information Technology Program Application
  • Supporting documents which includes unofficial transcripts and 3 letters of recommendation.

Selection Process

  1. Apply and be accepted to NPC. 
  2. Submit Health Information Technology Program application and all required documents by application deadline.
  3. Must earn a “C” or higher in all courses in the AAS Health Information Technology degree program with a minimal GPA of 2.5.
  4. Program Acceptance letters are sent out in late May early June.

 

Additional Requirement for All Nursing and Health Science Majors

In compliance with the terms of contractual agreements with health care agencies which serve as clinical laboratory sites as well as accreditation, federal and/or state requirements, Health Information Technology Program students must present evidence of :

  • Present evidence of required immunizations as required by the State of Arkansas clinical agencies; 
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) or titer
  • Tdap and Tetanus
  • Varicella Vaccine (2 shot series) or titer results
  • Hepatitis B series (3 shot series) or titer results
  • Flu Vaccine (obtained annually during the flu season)
  • Additional Vaccine/immunization as required based on current communicable disease(s)
  • Present evidence of health insurance
  • Present evidence of Tuberculosis (TB) testing (annually)
  • Current health data form from your PCP/APRN-form will be provided. Must release to participate in this program
  • You must successfully pass a Criminal Background Check and Drug Screen Process
