Introduction to Marine Repair
This course introduces students to basic marine parts, accessories and service order
creation. Shop safety, tool identification, and proper tool use are also included.
Electrical Systems I
This course covers basic electricity and electrical systems as they pertain to the
marine industry. AC and DC electricity, ignition systems, starting and charging systems,
and boat electric systems and wiring will be covered.
Electrical systems II
This course is a continuing study of the fundamentals of basic electricity and magnetism
in marine engines. The course covers various types of manual and electrical starters,
circuitry, charging and circuits, batteries, motor starting, ignition systems, and
magnets.
Drives
This course covers drivetrain systems-including lower unit operation, power trim
and tilt units, and mid sections. It is a combination and class and hands-on learning
and will give students an opportunity to gain a Yamaha certification.
Upon successful completion of the two-year program, students will have the opportunity
to earn a Certificate of Completion in Marine Engine Fundamentals.
Enrollment Criteria
All programs in the technical center have three class periods available for enrollment.
In the event there are more applicants for a section than seats available, students
will be asked to choose an alternate period. If the section(s) are still over enrollment
capacity, the following additional criteria will be used to determine acceptance into
the program:
- Minimum sixth grade reading level
- Minimum sixth grade math level
- Minimum 2.0 GPA
- Minimum reading score of 224 on the ACCUPLACER or 14 on the ACT.
- Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds
- Student interview
Final determination will be at the discretion of the instructor and the center director.
