Sally Carder Technical Fund Donates Automotive Lift

The National Park College (NPC) Automotive Technology program received a donation from the Sally Carder Technical Fund to purchase a new automotive lift. The fund is used to support technical programs and equipment needs. To date, the fund has been used to purchase equipment and upgrades for the welding, automotive and marine programs. The lift is a Bend Pak HDS-14LSXE four post hydraulic alignment lift and includes optional hydraulic jacks. It is capable of lifting 14,000 pounds and meets current industry standard for professional repair facilities. It was installed by McDaniel Equipment Company of Little Rock and took about six hours for two professional technicians to install.

Visual and Media Arts Hosts Summer Film School

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Visual and Media Arts program and Continuing Education Department will host a summer filmmaking course for high school students who will be in grades 10, 11, and 12 in the fall. The class will be a thorough introduction to all aspects of filmmaking. The schedule will be four days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., May 31 to June 26. The fee will be $100 per student. The course will cover aspects of preproduction from scriptwriting to preparation of storyboards. Principal photography will include lessons on camera operation, professional sound procedures, lighting, and more. Post production work will involve all aspects of digital film editing. The last week of the course will cover film promotion, including design of flyers and lessons in creating posters via silk screen printing. The students will have access to professional film equipment including Sony Cine Alta cameras, cinema lenses, professional lighting, and professional sound equipment including mixers, microphones, and booms.

NPC Marine Program Partners With Yamaha

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Marine Technology program has entered into a fourth partnership with Yamaha. Last month, the program announced new agreements with Indmar Marine, Mercury Marine and BPR Evinrude to expand student access to training materials and equipment. Students will have access to the complete online Yamaha training program, as well as hands-on service skills training at the Yamaha headquarters in Kennesaw, Georgia.

NPTC Celebrates Student Success

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park Technology Center (NPTC) held its annual awards program Thursday, April 21, in the Eisele Auditorium of the Frederick M. Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences. The auditorium was standing room only as family, friends, local school officials and NPTC faculty and staff watched more than 100 students being recognized for their efforts and achievements. Students from Lake Hamilton, Lakeside, Cutter-Morning Star, Jessieville, Hot Springs, Fountain Lake, Mountain Pine, and Caddo Hills High Schools received awards. Students received recognition for the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS), Student Government Association (SGA) Campus and Community Service Award, Technical Excellence, CHAMPION/Work Ethic and Outstanding Student.

SGA Visits State Capitol

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Student Government Association (SGA) visited the state capitol this week. Students toured the capitol complex, observed legislative committee meetings and House and Senate sessions. The day included a visit with Governor Asa Hutchinson. SGA President, Roger Powell presented the Governor with a resolution on behalf of the student body thanking him for his support of higher education. The resolution was also presented to Senator Bill Sample, Senator Alan Clark, Representative John Vines, Representative Bruce Cozart, and Dr. Brett Powell, Director of the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.

Hospitality and Tourism Students Open Flavor (501) Cafe

Hot Springs, Arkansas – The National Park College (NPC) Hospitality and Tourism program opened the Flavor (501) Café April 7 and April 21. The project is part of the Restaurant and Events Management Class and is the group’s largest fundraiser of the year. It provides students with hands-on management of a food and beverage operation along with all facets of an event including decorations, music, raffle and silent auction items, marketing, budgeting and more. The NPC Hospitality program takes students through a rigorous program that includes travel and tourism, hotel operations, food and beverage management, food prep skills, and event management training. In the spring semester, students experience hands-on training when planning and executing the opening of the student café. This year, students decided to embrace the newest trends in food and beverage management and change the name and “feel” of the student café from “The Alternative Café” to “Flavor (501) Café.” There is an increasing interest in the local food movement, popularity of organics, and the overall need for more focus on healthy cooking and nutrient retention in preparation. The name reflects their desire to deliver incredible food with interesting flavor profiles while promoting local producers.

NPC Continues to Expand Transfer Options for Students

Items for report included updates on new degrees and transfer agreements, campus development and events. The Board welcomed new hire, Cari Elliott. Mrs. Elliott is the new graphic artist for External Relations.

Communication and Arts Hosts Seventh Annual Poetry Contest

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Communication and Arts Division hosted the seventh Annual Poetry Contest last week in the NPC Library. Contest winners are selected anonymously by the English faculty. On average, the contest has about 25 entries each year. This year’s winners included, Steven Barber, first place for his poem, Midline; Ken Cooper, second place for his poem, Katesville Mills; and Steven Joe Echols, third place for his poem, With You.

NPC Singers Host Spring Concert

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) Singers and Soundwaves will perform their final concert of the year Sunday, May 1, at 3 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Students will perform a concert entitled, A Fond Benediction, based on the Commissioned Choral arrangement of The Lord Bless You and Keep You by Brandon Nelson. Student singers collected funds and commissioned Mr. Nelson to write an arrangement based on the Luftkin version of The Lord Bless You and Keep You. The students honored Mrs. Edds with the work while preparing to sing in New Orleans, Louisiana in February.

NPC Students Earn 11 SkillsUSA Medals

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) students competed in the SkillsUSA Arkansas Leadership and Skills Championship last week at the Hot Springs Convention Center. The annual competition saw over 1800 competitors from around the state that competed in over 100 contests at the high school and college levels. Students winning gold medals during the competition earned the right to compete at the national SkillsUSA Championships and Leadership Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, June 20-24. A total of 33 students represented NPC during the competition. National Park Technology Center (NPTC) high school students garnered seven medals, and NPC welding students earned four medals.
