National Park College (NPC) Construction Technology students are teaming up with Habitat for Humanity of Garland County to bring joy to families through a new initiative called Project Play.
The program provides handcrafted playsets, playhouses, and doghouses for new Habitat homeowners, built by NPC students as part of their hands-on training. The goal is to create safe, imaginative spaces for children and pets while giving students real-world construction experience.
Mundy said the idea for Project Play came after meeting Amanda Bass, director of the program, during a Habitat build day with the Hot Springs Board of Realtors. Habitat secures funding for the projects, while sponsors cover materials and supplies. NPC students provide the labor, gaining valuable experience that prepares them for careers in construction.
“Together, we can create backyard spaces where families can gather, children can explore, and pets can play, all while shaping the next generation of skilled builders,” Mundy said.
So far, students have delivered two playsets and a playhouse. In spring 2026, they are scheduled to complete another playset and a large doghouse. In addition to Project Play builds, students will construct two 8x8 storage buildings for Habitat homes.
“All students enrolled in construction classes work on these projects in one way or another,” Mundy said. “Each build gives students hands-on experience with real-world construction that prepares them for their careers while making a meaningful impact on the community.”
Sheryl Strother, director of the NPC Career Academy, said the partnership reinforces the importance of community service while providing practical training.
“We are excited to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Garland County on their new Project Play initiative,” Strother said. “This collaboration provides students with hands-on construction experience while reinforcing the importance of community service. Partnerships like this bring learning to life and help students better understand the skills, responsibilities, and career opportunities available in the construction field.”
