The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawk softball team (9-11) dropped its double header against No. 9 Northwest Mississippi Community College (NMCC) Thursday, falling 8-0 in game one and 2-1 in the finale.
NPC struggled to score in the opener, amassing just four hits while committing five errors. Freshmen Paige Attaway (Fouke), Maci Graves (Whitesboro, Texas), Rachel Lawyer (Rockwall, Texas) and Bre Phillips (Vilonia) recorded one hit apiece in the loss. Sophomore pitcher Bailee Cowell (Clarksville) got the start in the circle, allowing five runs on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings. Freshman hurler Avery Creech (Logansport, Louisiana) gave up three runs on six hits in relief, recording one strikeout.
The Nighthawks kept things close in game two, but were unable to turn the tide late in defeat. Trailing, 2-0, entering the fourth inning, NPC got on the board with Graves scoring on an error. Against tough pitching, National Park College mustered just one baserunner for the remainder of the game, resulting in a series sweep for NMCC.
From the circle, sophomore right-hander Gracie Fowler (Texarkana) allowed two runs on six hits while recording one strikeout over six innings. At the plate, Graves, sophomore Tayler Southern (Winnsboro, Louisiana), freshman Ella Cross (Monroe, Louisiana) and freshman Jordan Householder (Mansfield, Texas) recorded one hit apiece.
NPC plays host to No. 10 Louisiana State University-Eunice Saturday, March 15 in a double header at Hot Springs World Class High School beginning at 1 p.m. The games will be streamed live on the Nighthawk Network.
