National Park College (NPC) Professor of Biology Dr. Alexandra Barnard and Director of Admissions Caysie Martin spoke earlier this month at the Arkansas Recycling Coalition’s 34th annual Conference and Tradeshow.
The pair participated in the Collegiate Recycling Roundtable, where they highlighted NPC’s ongoing efforts to promote recycling and environmental sustainability on campus. Initiatives include the installation of new recycling bins in Dogwood and Redbud Halls, as well as hosting an annual Earth Day event each April for the past four years.
“It was inspiring to see the sustainability programs at bigger schools, with large budgets and multiple employees and interns,” Barnard said. “I also felt proud to showcase what we've achieved here with little money but fervent dedication of a few faculty, staff, and students.”
Martin emphasized the importance of community involvement in sustainability efforts.
“I’m excited we continue to have groups like the Recycling and Sustainability Committee and Sustainability Club active on campus,” Martin said. “Their events like Earth Day and the recycling initiatives show how small changes can make a big impact when we work together.”
The panel also featured representatives from Arkansas State University and the Arkansas Union Sustainability Program at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. The conference brought together educators, industry professionals and community leaders to share best practices and innovations in recycling and sustainability across the state.
