National Park College Career Academy students rebuilt a fishing dock at Family Park earlier this month as part of a community service project in partnership with Lowe’s of Hot Springs and the Hot Springs Parks and Trails Department.
Led by Construction Technology instructor Greg Mundy, students from several school districts worked alongside Lowe’s employees to remove the aging dock and replace it with new lumber.
The dock, which is designed to be accessible for people with disabilities, was stripped down to its joists before being rebuilt. Mundy said he first noticed its poor condition during a visit to Family Park and contacted the Parks and Trails Department to suggest the project.
“Some of these students had never picked up a tape measure before, so this was valuable
job training,” Mundy said. “I enjoy putting them in real world situations and teaching
on-site, instead of spending all our time sitting in the classroom talking about theory.”
In addition to gaining hands-on skills, students completed volunteer requirements and learned the importance of teamwork and community service.
“We’re proud to be out here working to make our community a better place,” Mundy said.
