National Park College (NPC) electrical apprenticeship student, Laila Tatyana Elliott is making strides in her studies which were inspired by her devotion to volunteer disaster relief. Originally from Louisiana, Elliott graduated from Cutter Morning Star High School in 2023 and has since been pursuing her passion for electrical work.
Elliott, now in her third year of the four-year apprenticeship program, chose this path to enhance her volunteer work and disaster relief efforts with the local design/construction department of her church. “Becoming an electrician is a trade that greatly benefits the volunteer work I do,” she said.
When asked about her choice of NPC, Elliott highlighted the convenience and connection to her workplace, Welco Electric Services. “National Park is close to home, and it’s where the company I work for attends,” she explained.
Elliott appreciates the welcoming atmosphere of the apprenticeship program. “Many of us work together or see each other at supply shops, and it’s great to bring that to the classroom,” she noted. The hands-on experience combined with weekly classes helps students like Elliott apply new skills regularly.
Looking ahead, Elliott plans to complete her apprenticeship by the 2025-26 school year, test for her Journeyman’s license, and pursue a master’s license. She credits her teachers, Scott and Noah Woodall, for their calm and knowledgeable guidance.
Elliott’s education at NPC has been instrumental in her development as an electrician. “Learning to read a codebook is invaluable in the trade,” she said. “This program helps me become a better and more well-rounded electrician.”
Awarded the National Park College President’s scholarship upon high school graduation, Elliott expressed gratitude to those who made it possible. “Thank you,” she said simply.
As she looks to the future, Elliott hopes to see more women in the trades. Her apprenticeship journey at NPC is a testament to her dedication and the supportive environment of the College’s apprenticeship program.
