National Park College’s (NPC) American Chemical Society (ACS) earned an Honorable Mention Student Communities Award from the ACS for the 2023-2024 academic year.

The Society Committee on Education (SOCED) selects ACS Student Communities, including U.S.-based Student Chapters, International Student Chapters, and Graduate Student Organizations (GSOs), for special recognition based on their annual reports. Awards are classified into three categories: outstanding, commendable, and honorable mention.

This year marks a significant milestone. It is the first time GSOs have submitted reports and earned awards. Eight GSOs are among the recipients this year. For the 2023-2024 academic year, SOCED awarded 84 outstanding, 139 commendable, and 126 honorable mentions, celebrating the exceptional contributions of ACS Student Communities worldwide.

Assistant professor of Chemistry, Uttar Shrestha said, “This award is meaningful because someone had to nominate the ACS-NPC chapter. Which means someone is taking notice of the service provided to the campus as well as the Hot Springs region.”

Martin added, “Uttar and I were honored that others have taken notice of the efforts of the ACS-NPC student chapter. Thank you for the recognition.”

NPC’s ACS chapter hosts three seminars on various chemistry-related topics each semester. These seminars are open to the public. The next ACS seminar is scheduled for November 15 in the Lab Science Building auditorium, LS-118 from noon to 1 p.m., featuring Dr. Gaumani Gyanwali, a Chemistry instructor at UA Rich Mountain in Mena, Arkansas.

Associate professor of Chemistry, Jason Martin said, “I believe consistency, quality of topics discussed and being open to the public are what allowed ACS at NPC to earn the award.”
