The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawk women’s basketball team (2-0) dazzled in its home opener Thursday, defeating Crowley’s Ridge College’s junior varsity team, 84-25.
Six days after setting the program record for the fewest points allowed in a game, the Nighthawks flexed their defensive muscle to rewrite the history books. Taking charge from the opening tip-off, NPC erupted for 24 first quarter points while holding the Lady Pioneers scoreless through 10 minutes. Led by strong shooting from freshman guard Khyra Garrett (Brownsboro, Texas) and freshman center Landrey Richardson (Grannis), NPC capitalized on turnovers to soar into the locker room with a 56-12 lead.
The Nighthawks remained hot in the second half, holding the Lady Pioneers to just six points in the third quarter and seven points in the fourth quarter, while spreading the scoring out among multiple players. Freshman forward Aaliyah Hollins (Nashville) and freshman guard Kishaliya Doss (Magnolia) led the way with six points apiece as NPC matched its largest margin of victory in program history in the 59-point win.
Garrett and Richardson led the Nighthawks in scoring with 15 points apiece, while Doss and Hollins finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the win.
The Nighthawk face Mississippi Delta Community College in the Lady Greyhound Tip-Off Classic, hosted by ASU Mid-South in West Memphis today at 5 p.m.
