The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawk women’s basketball team (1-0) defeated Independence Community College in its season opener Friday, 73-33, setting an NPC record for the fewest points allowed in program history.
From the opening tipoff, NPC surged to a 10-0 lead over the first five minutes and never looked back. Behind strong defense and timely shooting, NPC cruised to a 21-9 advantage after 10 minutes. In the second quarter, Freshman guard Hannah McLain (Cove) and freshman center Landrey Richardson (Grannis) guided the Nighthawks through a dominant second quarter, as NPC capitalized on Pirates’ turnovers to take a commanding 44-16 lead into the locker room.
After halftime, NPC endured a close third quarter, with the Nighthawks outscoring the Pirates, 12-8, to maintain a 56-24 lead. With the game in hand, NPC spread its wealth, offensively, through multiple players over the final quarter en route to victory.
McLain and Richardson led the Nighthawks in scoring with 12 points apiece, while freshman guard Khyra Garrett (Brownsboro, Texas) added 11 points in the win.
The Nighthawk women play host to Crowley Ridge College’s junior varsity team Thursday, November 7 at 5:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Nighthawk Network.
