National Park College’s (NPC) Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) officers interviewed faculty and staff last month to inform students about resources available on campus. This week’s interview is with Robyn Hendrix, Program Coordinator with TRIO Student Support Services (SSS).
Hendrix explained that the process begins with a simple application. “A student completes an application that consists of a simple questionnaire. Everyone is encouraged to apply, but our focus is on first-generation, disabled, and students meeting specific income thresholds,” she said. Open program slots are filled as they become available, ensuring that those who need support the most can access it.
The TRIO SSS program at NPC is designed to assist and support students throughout their college journey. “Services provided include personalized advising, transfer assistance, workshops addressing common student concerns, tutoring, limited scholarships, supplies, and a dedicated tutoring and study area,” Hendrix noted. Additionally, cultural trips and activities are scheduled throughout the school year, all at no cost to the students.
Hendrix emphasized the importance of addressing both common and unique challenges faced by first-generation students. “Workshops are utilized to address common concerns, such as recent changes to FAFSA or test-taking tips. Individualized attention can be given to each and every TRIO student to help advise, guide, and support them through their own personal journey,” she said. The program also fosters a sense of community among students, helping them realize they are not alone.
When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Hendrix shared, “I enjoy the time that I get to spend with our students the very most. It is such a joy to watch them transition as the semesters progress in confidence and purpose as they create their own path that leads away from NPC.” She highlighted graduation as a particularly rewarding time, celebrating the achievements of the students.
Hendrix encourages all students to take advantage of the resources available through TRIO SSS. “We are here and we love to help. You can use our resources as little or as much as you like. We do offer a lot of different things, so there is literally something for everyone,” she said. The TRIO SSS office is located on the second floor of the Student Commons Building in the Enrollment Services area.
