The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawk men’s and women’s soccer teams lost their matches against Pearl River Community College Sunday, with the women falling to the 11th-ranked Wildcats, 10-0, and the men dropping a 1-0 decision to the 10th-ranked Wildcats.
In the opener, the Nighthawk women (1-6, 1-0) fell behind early and could not keep up. Following a strong defensive start from each team, Pearl River Community College broke the stalemate with 29 minutes remaining in the first half, sparking the team’s offense en route to a 3-0 Wildcat lead at halftime. Pearl River Community College kept its foot on the gas throughout the second half, with NPC unable to withstand the Wildcats’ barrage of goals, resulting in defeat.
A single goal made the difference in men’s action, with NPC (2-5, 1-0) going toe-to-toe with the Wildcats, defensively, but coming up short in the end. In a rematch of last year’s season opener, in which NPC defeated the 13th-ranked Wildcats, Pearl River Community College, both teams battled hard in a scoreless affair after 45 minutes. Two minutes into the second half, the Wildcats’ lit up the scoreboard, forcing the Nighthawks to play from behind. Despite six shots on goal down the stretch, NPC was unable to even the score in the loss.
National Park College travels to Northwest Mississippi Community College Tuesday, October 1 in Senatobia, Mississippi. The women kick off at 4 p.m. against the top-ranked Rangers, followed by men’s action at 6 p.m. The matches will be streamed by Northwest Mississippi Community College.
