NPC Receives Grant From Roy And Christine Sturgis Charitable And Educational Trust
National Park College (NPC) received a $36,580 grant from the Roy and Christine Sturgis
Charitable and Educational Trust. The grant will be used to purchase a Puritan Bennett
980 Ventilator to train students in NPC’s Respiratory Care program.
“Respiratory therapists (RT) evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing
problems or other cardiopulmonary disorders. The role of the RT has been highlighted
over the past few years due to the pandemic and the respiratory complications of hospitalized
COVID-19 patients. Many of these critically ill patients required mechanical ventilation
and were admitted into the critical care units for ventilator support,” said Janice
Ivers, dean of Nursing and Health Sciences.
Ivers added, “Thank you to the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable and Educational
Trust for selecting the NPC Respiratory Care Program as the recipient of the grant
which has provided us with a new state-of-the-art ventilator so that we can better
prepare our students to care for critically ill patients.”
Respiratory Care Program Director, Paul Lowe said, “We are thankful to The Roy and
Christine Sturgis Charitable and Educational Trust for the grant which allowed us
to purchase the Puritan Bennett 980 Ventilator. It will ensure students are trained
on state-of-the-art equipment used in hospitals today. Respiratory therapists were
relied upon during the pandemic to operate ventilators and provide lifesaving breathing
interventions. The Respiratory Care Program at National Park College is preparing
respiratory therapists to meet the demand of these and other conditions faced daily
in health care settings. This meaningful investment in respiratory care equipment
and technology will enable students to have hands-on experiences using the most up-to-date
equipment to better prepare them to be respiratory therapy professionals.”
