Nighthawk Women Soar To Victory

Hope Thomas dribbling down court.The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawk women’s basketball team (1-5) picked up its first win of the season Tuesday, defeating Labette Community College, 77-68.

In a physical ballgame which resulted in seven players across both teams fouling out, the Nighthawks outlasted the Cardinals from the free throw line to achieve victory. Freshman guard Hope Thomas (Grady) led NPC out of the gate with nine points in a hard-fought first quarter. Tied, 18-18, after 10 minutes, Thomas and freshman guard Kaylee Meredith (Dover) paced NPC in the second quarter, scoring seven points apiece en route to a 36-32 halftime lead for the Nighthawks.

In the third quarter, the Nighthawks took control of the game from beyond the arc. Meredith sank four three-pointers in a 16-point third quarter effort to boost the Nighthawk lead to double digits. Down to NPC’s final five available players in the fourth quarter, Thomas stood tall, knocking down nine of her 14 total free throws to set the Nighthawks’ single-game free throw record and slam the door on the team’s first win of the season.

Thomas led the Nighthawks in scoring with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Meredith added 26 points in the win.

The Nighthawk women travel to Dallas College-Mountain View Thursday, November 30 at 5 p.m.
