Nighthawks Softball Splits Against Eagles and Dragons
The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawks softball team (10-6) split its road series against No. 16 Paris Junior College Tuesday, dropping a 12-4 decision in game one and rebounding to a 14-5 win in game two.
Despite taking a 2-1 lead in the opener, NPC couldn’t overcome a five-run third inning from Paris Junior College. NPC plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single from freshman catcher Gracie Redmon (Benton) and a bases loaded hit by pitch for sophomore left fielder Shelbee LeJeuene (Maurice, Louisiana), but the Dragons responded with another five-run effort in the bottom of the frame, ending the game in six innings.
Sophomore center fielder Emma Hayes (Munford, Alabama) led the Nighthawks with three hits in the loss.
NPC bounced back in game two, taking an 8-0 lead through two innings and cruising to its second win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season. After allowing three runs in the bottom of the third inning, the Nighthawks exploded for six runs in the fourth to cement the game. Redmon and freshman shortstop Logan Nies (Rockwall, Texas) blasted home runs on the day, with Redmon going yard in the second inning and Nies hitting a two-run shot in the fourth inning en route to the team’s 10th win of the season.
In the circle, freshman pitcher Cameron Person (Bonham, Texas) picked up her team-leading fifth win of the season, allowing five runs on three hits with three strikeouts over four and one-third innings. Freshman second baseman Reagan White (Carrollton, Texas) went three-for-four at the plate to lead NPC in hits.
