Soccer Competes Against Suns

Kaylie Goad on field about to kick the soccer ball.The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawk men’s and women’s soccer teams faced Dallas College-Cedar Valley Sunday, with the women falling, 4-1, and the men finishing in a 3-3 draw.

In women’s action, NPC (0-5) got off to a strong start, but could not hold on late in defeat. Sophomore Kaylie Goad (Wharton, Texas) put the Nighthawks in front on a corner kick assisted by freshman midfielder Natalie Brice (Benton, Louisiana) two minutes into the first half. Strong defense paved the way for NPC throughout the rest of the first half, with freshman goalkeeper Dietie Hale (Hot Springs) racking up multiple saves over the first 45 minutes to give NPC the 1-0 advantage at halftime.

In a tale of two halves, the Suns responded with the equalizer 10 minutes into the second half and took the lead, 2-1, with 13 minutes remaining in the match. Dallas College-Cedar Valley added two additional insurance goals over the final 10 minutes of the match, which proved to be too much for the Nighthawks to overcome.

Hale picked up seven saves for NPC in the loss.

In men’s action, a 3-2 lead slipped away for NPC (4-0-2) late, resulting in the Nighthawks’ second draw of thePatrick Chan dribbles the soccer ball down the field. season. Sophomore midfielder Daniel David (London, England) and sophomore left back Patrick Chan (Sydney, Australia) got the scoring started for NPC early, giving the Nighthawks a 2-0 lead 18 minutes into the match. Two minutes later, the Suns cut the lead in half, 2-1. Midway through the second half, the Suns evened the match, 2-2. With seven minutes remaining in the contest, sophomore winger Jack Avery (Brighton, England) put the Nighthawks in front, 3-2, but the Suns poked the equalizer through with four minutes remaining, sending the match to a draw.

NPC faces Northwest Mississippi Community College Tuesday, September 12 in Senatobia, Mississippi. The Nighthawk women take on the Rangers at 1 p.m., followed by men’s action at 3 p.m.
