Nighthawks Drop Series In Texas

National Park College Softball

The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawk softball team (12-7) dropped its double header against Northeast Texas Community College (NTCC) Sunday, falling to the Eagles, 6-0, in the opener and 11-10 in the finale.

Held to just one hit in the series opener, NPC struggled to dissect the Eagles’ pitching early. Freshman catcher Gracie Redmon (Benton) recorded the Nighthawks’ lone hit on a fourth-inning single, but the team couldn’t rally back, ending NPC’s three-game winning streak.

Freshman pitcher Cameron Person (Bonham, Texas) took the loss in the circle, surrendering three runs on four hits with two strikeouts over three and one-third innings. Sophomore pitcher Kacey Solida (Fouke) threw two and two-thirds innings in relief in the loss.

NPC found its offense in game two, scoring 10 runs on 15 hits, but fell short in the end. The Nighthawks grabbed the lead, 1-0, in the first inning on an RBI single from freshman designated player Reagan Torres (Fort Worth, Texas). The Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead and added eight insurance runs over the next three innings to pad the lead.

Trailing, 10-5, after four innings, NPC rallied for three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to even the score. In the fifth inning, Redmon knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice, while freshman right fielder Aubree Goodnight (Benton) smashed a two-run single. In the sixth inning, freshman shortstop Logan Nies (Rockwall, Texas) smacked a two-run double to tie the game at 10. In the bottom of the seventh inning, however, NTCC walked it off on an RBI sacrifice fly to secure the series sweep.

Freshman pitcher Makenna Keeton (Morrilton) got the start in the circle, allowing 10 runs on 13 hits over three and one-third innings, striking out two. Sophomore pitcher Jadyn Hart (Magazine) took the loss in relief, allowing one run on one hit while striking out four in three and one-third innings.

NPC travels to Connors State College Tuesday, February 28, for a double header beginning at 1 p.m. NPC hosts the inaugural Nighthawk Round Robin tournament March 2-3 at Majestic Park. Featuring Navarro College, Allen County Community College and Northwest Mississippi Community College, the Nighthawks play host to Allen County Community College and Navarro College at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, Friday, March 3. The games will be streamed live on the Nighthawk Network.
