Maxey Named Hot Springs Geology Club President

George Maxey headshotNational Park College (NPC) Geology instructor George Maxey was elected President of the Hot Springs Geology Club (HSGC) earlier this year.

Ray Lynch, editor of the Hot Springs Bulletin, nominated Maxey for the position after Maxey gave a speech at an HSGC meeting last year.

Maxey was reluctant at first, but after some encouragement from his wife, he agreed to serve. “One of the reasons I was kind of hesitant to run for the president of the club was because I thought, ‘I wonder if I could do a good enough job,’ because these guys have done a fantastic job over the years,” Maxey explained.

In January 2023, the membership unanimously voted Maxey the next President of the HSGC. The position serves a one-year term.

When asked what achieving this position means to him, Maxey replied, “It’s an honor, first of all. This club and the bulletin they produce has won more awards for excellence than any other Geology club in the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies, so it has an astounding history.”

Maxey added, “I love geology. There’s just such incredible stories there.”

The HSGC meets every fourth Thursday of the month at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts at 7 p.m. Their next meeting is scheduled for March 23, 2023. Maxey encourages all who are interested to attend.
