The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawks baseball team (9-6) extended its winning streak to eight games on Wednesday, sweeping a nonconference double header with Henderson State University’s junior varsity team. The Nighthawks won game one, 11-0, and defeated the Reddies, 4-0, in game two.
After plating a single run in the first inning, NPC bolstered its lead with four-run efforts in the second and third innings to put the game out of reach early. Adding two runs in the fifth inning, the Nighthawks cruised to victory.
Freshman third baseman Daeton Bassett (Fountain Lake) went 3-3 at the plate to lead the Nighthawks in hitting. Freshman pitcher Jaden Lewis (Troup, TX) threw a gem in the five-inning shutout, holding the Reddies scoreless over five innings with two hits, one walk and nine strikeouts.
In game two, NPC broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with an RBI double from Demias Jimerson (Malvern). Later in the inning, an RBI single from Bassett would give the Nighthawks a two-run advantage.
An RBI triple from freshman John Satterfield (Little Rock) extended the lead in the fourth inning. Satterfield would later come around to score on a wild pitch to plate the fourth and final run in the Nighthawks’ win.
Freshman CJ Price (Little Rock), sophomore Jalen Hicks (Baton Rouge, LA), Jimerson, Satterfield and Bassett recorded one hit apiece in the win. Freshman hurler Payton Windham (Maud, TX) got the win on the mound, allowing just three hits while striking out 14 through seven innings.
National Park College plays host to Lyon College in a nonconference double header at Majestic Park on Wednesday, Mar. 9, beginning at 12 p.m. The games will be streamed live on the Nighthawk Network.
