Nighthawks Cruise Past Mustangs

The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawks men’s basketball team took down Central Baptist College’s junior varsity team in nonconference play on Monday, 127-63.

NPC (17-6) erupted from the opening tipoff, powering to a 29-3 lead with 14:48 remaining in the first half. Utilizing their size and speed, the Nighthawks dominated from beyond the arc, knocking down 12 first-half three pointers.

Five Nighthawks racked up double digit point totals in the first half, led by 17 points from sophomore Jaylen O’Conner (Oklahoma City, OK) and 16 points from sophomore Sayvon Traylor (Atlanta, GA). Freshman JoQuarius Valrie (Houston, TX) added 12 points en route to an 83-32 halftime lead.

Kam Vick jumping up with basketball to make a basket.NPC made history in the first half, with sophomore Kam Vick (Little Rock) becoming the Nighthawks’ all-time steals leader, passing the record previously set by Terry Clardy Jr. Vick now possesses the all-time records for scoring, three-pointers made, free throws made, assists and steals for National Park College.

NPC kept its foot on the gas in the second half, scoring freely and using its defense to create additional offensive opportunities. Late in the game, the Nighthawks tied NPC’s all-time record for three pointers made with 17, cruising to the team’s 17th victory of the season.

Traylor led the Nighthawks in scoring with 26 points, while Valrie and sophomore Rodrique Massenat (Trenton, NJ) added 21 and 18 points, respectively. O’Conner added 17 points, while Vick and freshman Garett Powell (Springboro, OH) finished with 16 and 15 points, respectively, in the win.

The Nighthawk men and women resume NJCAA Region II play on Thursday in Camden against Southern Arkansas University Tech. The women tip off at 5 p.m. followed by the men at 7 p.m.
