The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawks women’s basketball team (0-1) dropped a close decision in its season opener Wednesday, falling to Southwest Tennessee Community College, 73-68.
NPC found itself in the driver’s seat early, fueled by four first-quarter three-pointers from sophomore Jhyla Calvin (Morrilton). In the second quarter, sophomores India Atkins (Bryant) and Amaya Coakley (Killeen, TX) set the pace with six points apiece en route to a 42-37 halftime lead.
In a tale of two halves, NPC’s offense was held in check throughout the final two quarters. Despite nine second-half points from Atkins, NPC struggled from the free throw line down the stretch, allowing the Saluqis to regain the lead and seal the victory.
Atkins led the Nighthawks in scoring with 20 points, while Calvin and Coakley added 13 and 11 points, respectively, in the loss.
