The American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS) selected NPC faculty member,
Dr. George Maxey, as the 2022 Scholarship Honoree.
As the Scholarship Honoree, Maxey is tasked with identifying two students in the field
of geology who are working on their master's degree or enrolled in a doctoral program
to receive the scholarships.
Maxey has a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Sciences from the University of
North Texas (UNT), where he also taught courses for 26 years. He began teaching at
NPC in 2015 following his retirement from UNT. He has been a member of many organizations
centered around geology, including the Dallas Paleontological Society, the Geological
Society of America, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the Dallas
Geological Society. He has also had several publications over his career including
the Earth Science Laboratory Manual, Physical Geology Laboratory Manual, and the Historical
Geology Laboratory Manual.
“To me, it’s a fantastic honor to be recognized by the American Federation of Mineralogical
Societies. However, for me, the right to find and select a couple of students to give
scholarships to overshadows that. I think that’s just the greatest thing to be able
to do something for the students coming up, entering the field and starting their
careers. So, I was very happy to get to do that,” said Maxey.
