National Park College’s (NPC) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Beta Psi, won six
awards at the 2021 Oklahoma/Arkansas Virtual Regional Convention March 5, 2021. Alpha Beta Psi won second place in the Top Five College project and the Top Five Honors
in Action project. The chapter was recognized as a Top Five Distinguished Chapter,
while also receiving the award for being the Most Distinguished Chapter out of the
region's 43 chapters. They also received an award for Top Honors in Action for Theme
1.
The 2020-2021 PTK officer team included Hunter Speas, president, Jordana Merriweather,
vice president of communication and records, Emmery Boyd, vice president of service,
Ali Meeks, vice president of fellowship and fundraising, and David Silk, vice president
of scholarship.
The Honors in Action (HIA) project highlighted the education of women and its impact
on society.
“The HIA project has shown me the importance of continuing my education personally
and the importance in helping women achieve an education,” said Ali Meeks, PTK vice
president of fellowship and fundraising.
For their college service project, the chapter focused on developing a campus safety
course for the student D2L community.
David Silk, vice president of scholarship, stated, “PTK is a family of friends that
work together for a common goal of educational exploration. The process of imagining,
researching and crafting each project was a challenge, throw in a global pandemic
and they become almost impossible. However, humanity thrives on impossibilities and
our PTK family was no different. Our chapter not only completed both projects but
was awarded Most Distinguished Chapter in our region for our efforts.”
Dr. Rebekah Robinette is an NPC instructor and serves as the chapter advisor for Alpha
Beta Psi as well as the OK/AR regional coordinator. Robinette was awarded the Most
Distinguished Advisor award. To qualify, an advisor must have served four or more
years as an advisor.
Robinette shared, “I am so proud of the chapter this year. The officers were elected
and, almost immediately, were thrown into the upheaval of the pandemic. They showed
true dedication and leadership throughout and made sure they carried on with chapter
projects, just in a very different way than others before them. They faced obstacles
never experienced by their predecessors and they conquered each and every one of them.
I am looking forward to seeing the outgoing team move on in their lives and I hope
that every officer and member grows as individuals through their involvement with
PTK.”
