The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawk softball team dropped a NJCAA Region II Division II conference game to Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech) Saturday, 11-10.
After the Lady Rockets put up four runs in the first inning, NPC went to work over the next six innings, mounting a comeback and taking a 10-7 lead through six innings.
NPC gained the lead in the fourth inning behind RBI from sophomore Emily Cecil (Conway) and freshman Madeline Bruce (Conway). The Nighthawks added two more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run home run from freshman Madalynn Thompson (Bryant), while freshmen Kaylee Partee (Vilonia) and Baley Williams (Alma) each added RBI in the sixth inning.
SAU Tech manufactured three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 10, before walking off in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal the series opener.
Nighthawk sophomore hurler Sarah Todd (Conway) allowed 10 hits and seven runs over four and two-thirds innings, while striking out two in the loss. Freshman Brooke Nalley (Alvarado, TX) threw four innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Game two was suspended due to darkness and will be completed at a future date. The Nighthawks trailed the Rockets, 7-1, in the seventh inning before play was halted.
NPC plays host at Bossier Parish Community College (Bossier City, LA) Monday, Mar. 15 for a double header beginning at 1 p.m.
