Raiders Outlast Nighthawks
The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawks men’s and women’s soccer teams fell to
Rose State College on the road Sunday, with the women falling to the No. 18-ranked
Raiders, 10-0, and the men dropping a 3-2 overtime decision.
In women’s action, NPC struggled to find its footing in the opening minutes, allowing
three goals within the first seven minutes. Throughout the remainder of the period,
the Nighthawks (1-9) would find their rhythm, defensively, but were held without a
shot attempt by the Raiders’ tough defensive front. Trailing, 3-0, entering the second
half, Rose State kept its foot on the gas, adding seven goals over the final 45 minutes
to take the regular-season sweep.
NPC freshman goalkeeper Brooklyn Mize (Godley, TX) converted 16 saves in the loss,
and continues to lead the NJCAA Region II with 144 saves this season.
In men’s action, NPC (0-7) and Rose State went toe-to-toe over the first 45 minutes,
with each team trading multiple shot attempts over the first 45 minutes. Trailing,
1-0, entering the second half, freshmen Matthew Farias (Miami, FL) and David Montelongo
(Katy, TX) led the comeback effort, scoring goals at the 55-minute mark and the 72-minute
mark, respectively, to force the teams into overtime, 2-2. In the overtime period,
Rose State found a quick score, sealing the regular-season sweep of NPC.
NPC freshman goalkeeper Paulino Ruiz (Tyler, TX) converted five saves, while Farias
and Montelongo scored one goal apiece in the loss.
The Nighthawk men and women face Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Sunday, Oct. 3 in Miami,
OK. The women kick off at 2 p.m. with the men following at 4 p.m.
