The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawks women’s soccer team picked up a victory
against Redlands Community College on the road Thursday, defeating the Cougars, 3-2,
in overtime.
An aggressive offensive start led to early success for the Nighthawks (2-10), with
freshman Yessenia Vargas (Houston, TX) lighting up the scoreboard twice in the first
10 minutes. Redlands Community College clawed back throughout the first half, squeaking
in two goals to knot the game, 2-2, at halftime.
In the second half, NPC kept its same offensive pressure, attempting eight shots over
the final 45 minutes. Stiff defense from the Cougars prevented the Nighthawks from
regaining the lead, ending regulation with the game tied, 2-2.
In overtime, the Nighthawks wasted no time claiming victory, with Vargas scoring 28
seconds into extra time on an assist from freshman Samantha Mata (Pasadena, TX) to
secure the season sweep of the Cougars.
NPC freshman goalkeeper Brooklyn Mize (Godley, TX) converted four saves and continues
to lead the NJCAA Region II with 164 saves this season. Vargas completed the hat trick
with three goals scored in the win.
The Nighthawk men and women face Eastern Oklahoma State on Sunday, Oct. 10 in Wilburton,
OK. The women kick off at 2 p.m. with the men following at 4 p.m.
