Nighthawks Fall In Grizzly Invitational

The National Park College (NPC) Nighthawks men’s basketball team (6-3) dropped two games in the Grizzly Classic, hosted by Missouri State University-West Plains, over the weekend, dropping a 63-62 decision to Missouri State University-West Plains Friday and falling, 82-72, to Southwestern Community College Saturday.

After being outscored, 35-26, in the first half of Friday’s action, NPC flexed its defensive muscles to erase the deficit and threaten the Grizzlies late. After holding the Grizzlies to just 28 points in the second half, NPC missed the game-tying three-pointer in the final seconds and settled for a field goal as time expired, snapping a four-game winning streak.

Freshman Garett Powell (Springboro, OH) led the Nighthawks in scoring with 17 points. Sophomores Sayvon Traylor (Atlanta, GA) and Rodrique Massenat (Trenton, NJ) added 14 and 12 points, respectively, while freshman JoQuarius Valrie finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

On Saturday, NPC struggled to overcome a slow start, offensively, leading to a 43-31 deficit after 20 minutes. In the second half, the Nighthawks outscored the Spartans, 41-39, but were unable to complete the comeback.

Traylor led the Nighthawks in scoring with 17 points. Massenat and sophomore Jaylen O’Conner (Oklahoma City, OK) each contributed 15 points, while sophomore Kam Vick (Little Rock) added 11 points in the loss.

The Nighthawks play host to Central Baptist College’s junior varsity team in the Kettle today at 7 p.m. The game will be live streamed on the Nighthawk Network.
