Gabriel Garza with her winning submissionNational Park Technology Center (NPTC) student Gabriel Garza was selected as the Garland County Habitat for Humanity logo contest winner this month. Garza is a junior at Lakeside High School and is currently enrolled in the NPTC Advertising and Design program.

The contest was created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Garland County chapter. Cindy Wagstaff, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity collaborated with instructor Glenda Davis and her Advertising and Design students. NPTC students have been involved in several community projects like this one. Davis said, “These are such great opportunities for our students to get real, hands-on project experiences.”

Students were educated on the history of the organization and the positive impact the volunteers have made in the community over the past 25 years. Garland County Habitat for Humanity helps local families obtain affordable housing. From helping build houses to offering classes on financial management, the organization provides hope and opportunity.

Davis created a paint station for the students to make hand prints to represent Habitat’s motto, “a hand up not a hand out.” Garza was inspired to use Adobe Illustrator to create a vector version of his handprint and used it to design the winning logo. The logo will be used in events and promotions for the organization.
