The National Park College (NPC) Knithawks crocheted octopi for newborns at CHI St.
Vincent Anthony Childbirth Center. Jennifer Evans and Karla Lee responded to the nurses’
request for the crocheted items to help comfort babies.
Haley Griffith, R.N. stated, “At one time we had crocheted octopi in the nursery
to place in the bassinets with the babies, but the source dwindled. They are extremely
comforting to the newborns, as they grasp the tentacles it reminds them of their cord
in utero. The octopi are invaluable with the babies who are on oxygen or have other
tubing, which keeps them from pulling on the tubes. Parents also love them and are
happy to have a keepsake.”
Nurse Manager Marsha Oliver, Griffith and all the nurses at CHI extend their appreciation
to Jennifer and Karla for their thoughtfulness and hard work.
