National Park College (NPC) Career Pathways program honored students who were graduating
last week. The Career Pathways Initiative offers support services to help students
overcome the barriers that keep them from completing college.
Graduates showed their appreciation for the program and the program’s staff Lataschya Harris and Nadia Gonzalez. Students repeatedly
spoke of the support, encouragement and dedication they received from Harris and Gonzalez.
Student Lyndsey Shukers shared how she and her husband, Doug, were both graduates
from NPC thanks to Career Pathways. One night while cleaning an office building Lyndsey
noticed a piece of paper that had fallen on the floor. When she picked it up, she
noticed it was an advertisement for the nursing program at NPC. Together, the Shukers
decided that was a sign. Doug went to nursing school and upon his graduation Lyndsey
enrolled at NPC. She transferred in with 150 credit hours, but no degree. Despite
a house fire on the first day of school, Lyndsey graduated with an Associate in Liberal
Studies, a Technical Certificate in Pre-Nursing, and a Technical Certificate in Allied
Health.
Career Pathways honored Ebony Jackson and Jarvis Hall as Pathway Students of the
Year. Harris stated, “There are several couples that have come through Career Pathways
together, [we] have never honored a couple but we have never seen a couple like this
before. They encourage each other…[and] are growing together.”
