National Park College (NPC), US Stations and Lloyd’s Auto Sales announced the recipient
of the Second Chance Scholarship Friday. Registered nursing student Crystal Sibley
was surprised with the award during class.
Sibley is a non-traditional student returning to complete a degree after leaving high
school in tenth grade more than 25 years ago. She completed her general education
development (GED) diploma at Garland County Community College (now NPC) in 1994 and
went on to complete certified nursing assistant training. She worked in the medical
field for a few years and then decided to take a job in bookkeeping to allow for more
flexibility raising her children.
Sibley and her husband have four children including two daughters 17 and 19, and
two sons ages 7 and 8 who were adopted from foster care in 2013. She and her oldest
daughter are both currently enrolled in college, and her youngest daughter will join
them in the fall of 2019.
Sibley said she realized her desire to complete her degree while helping her daughter
prepare for college. “We made a family decision that I should go to college and obtain
my RN license,” she said. “I was absolutely terrified at first having been out of
school for over 20 years, but I have discovered that I love learning and I am so proud
of myself. I had to figure out school again, how to study, how to manage my time and
family and how to excel in a very competitive program,” she added.
Sibley made the Dean’s List and was recently inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International
Honors Society. She will graduate in May 2020 with an Associate of Science degree
in Registered Nursing.
Lloyd Robertson presented Sibley with the award. He said, “She so exemplifies the
whole concept of ‘second chance’.”
“I’m glad I did this when I did this. I think your life works out the way it is supposed
to and I wouldn’t change a thing,” said Sibley.
