National Park College’s (NPC) Academic Success Center (ASC) had a 63 percent increase in students served last year, and a 120 percent increase in the number of hours students spent in the center. They reported 84 percent of students who have completed at least five tutoring sessions in a particular subject earned a C or better in the course.

The center has seen tremendous growth over the past few years. Coordinator, Lisa Walker said she believes more students are taking advantage of tutoring resources because of the success of their peers and because of the comfortable atmosphere the center provides.

We teach study techniques and offer support and encouragement in a warm, friendly environment that helps build confidence in our students,” said Walker.

The center offers free individual tutoring sessions for currently enrolled students, which are available without an appointment at various times throughout the week. Subjects include reading, writing, basic math to calculus, anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, and accounting. The staff also provides guidance for students on notetaking, time management, test taking, and study skills. Two study rooms equipped with computers are available for students who wish to work on homework before or after tutoring sessions.

Online tutoring is available 24 hours a day in most subjects through a partnership with Tutor.com. The service allows students to connect with a live tutor or drop off an essay for feedback within 24 hours. Pictured is academic tutor Paula Henderson with student Bee Thao.

NPC student Sarah Duran shared her experience with the center’s services and staff. “It’s no secret, I struggle with math. In fact, I even waited 15 years until I attempted college because I was intimidated by math. Fast forward to today, and I’m a Dean’s List student, a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and an avid user of the on campus tutoring center,” she said.

Duran encouraged her peers to take advantage of the free resources available. “I would not be where I am today academically if I did not heavily utilize our amazing tutors. Believe me when I say they will work with you until you are comfortable with your math. The ASC center has such a caring and supportive environment, and I’m thankful for all the help I’ve received from them,” she added.
