National Park College (NPC) Upward Bound will host an induction ceremony honoring its inaugural cohort Thursday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fredrick M. Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences. Sixty promising 9-12 grade students from Mountain Pine and Hot Springs High Schools were selected for the start of this new federally funded TRIO program.

NPC was awarded a five-year TRIO Upward Bound Grant from the United States Department of Education to target at-risk students from Hot Springs area schools, especially first generation college students. These students may not be adequately prepared for college and are often overwhelmed by the many challenges they face after high school graduation.

Upward Bound is a selective college preparatory program that provides rigorous and immersive academic experiences to empower high school students to attend and succeed in college. The program encourages students in grades 9-12 in the Garland County area to complete high school and develop their plans to attend a postsecondary educational program through tutoring, cultural enrichment and summer sessions.

Over the course of the year, Upward Bound provides academic development through ACT/SAT prep, academic advising, travel opportunities, tutorials and workshops. Students access financial aid resources, professionalism training, and are assisted with the college admissions process.
