The National Park College (NPC) First Friday Lunch and Lecture Series will feature Dr. Jorista Garrie, assistant professor of wildlife science at Arkansas Tech University. The event will be held Friday, February 2 at noon in Lab Sciences 118 and is sponsored by the NPC Math and Sciences Division and Frito Lay.
Dr. Garrie will cover different types of traps used to catch animals, and markers
to track them in the wild. Dr. Garrie will explain which traps work best for what
types of animals, and some common misconceptions about types of traps. Attendees will
see a radio-telemetry demonstration and be able to handle tracking and trapping equipment.
Dr. Garrie was born and raised in South Africa where she studied resource selection
in impala antelope in Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest national park.
Her current research centers on the consequences of controlled burns and wildfires
on insects and how that affects bat foraging and bat occupancy in the Ozarks.
The event is open to the public and community members are welcome to attend.
