NPC To Host Events For Domestic Violence Awareness Month
National Park College (NPC) will host a series of events to help raise awareness for domestic violence this month. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.
The Clothesline Awareness Project will be on display October 24-25 in the Frederick Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences. The project includes over 460 t-shirts for all known domestic violence murder victims in Arkansas dating back to 1989. Due to the size of the project, the physical display only includes t-shirts for the past 10 years.
Bystander Intervention Training will be available October 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Frederick Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences room 119. CHI St. Vincent Violence Prevention Specialist, Susie Reece will lead the training which will address reasons those who witness incidents may think they are incapable of taking action and offer ideas on how to comfortably address uncomfortable situations.
A panel discussion will take place October 24 from 4:45-5:45 p.m. in the Frederick Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences auditorium. The panel will include a variety of perspectives from law enforcement to that of the victim. Participants will include Garland County Prosecuting Attorney, Michelle Lawrence; Ouachita Behavioral Health and Wellness mental health professional, Bonnie Bryant; Garland County District Judge, Meredith Switzer; Hot Springs Police Department Sargent Lee Ann Zaner; HER Magazine writer, Lara Farrar; Executive Director of Domestic Violence Prevention, Inc., Pam Dennington; advocate for survivors, Cassi Bowen; and moderator, Darla Thurber.
Mayor Pat McCabe, Dr. John Hogan and various community leaders will present a proclamation at 6 p.m.
These events are free and open to the public.
