Sexual Assault Awareness
The Red Flag Campaign is a project that educates faculty, staff, and students on the
intervention and prevention of dating violence. The campaign develops public awareness
on the warning signs, or “Red Flags”, of any verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual
abuse that may be happening around them.
Statistics show:
- Every 60 seconds, 1.3 million women are forcibly raped in the U.S.
- 24% of sexually active girls younger than 13 report their first sexual encounter was non-consensual.
- Rape victims are 13 times more likely to attempt suicide.
- Half of juvenile offenders have been sexually assaulted by the age of 18.
- There are currently 6,324 registered sex offenders in Arkansas.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reports that the number of
registered sex offenders has increased by nearly a quarter in the last 5 years. Sexual
violence is a grave public health issue that carries both short and long term consequences
for the victim and their family. The American Medical Association calls sexual assault
the “silent, violent epidemic.”
Nighthawks, remember to wear your Red Flag shirt on November 17th.
