PTK Honors in Action Project

Alpha Beta Psi, NPC’s PTK chapter, examined gender roles through television and the media, psychological evidence, and feminine/masculine perspectives as part of their Honors in Action project. HIA is a program “designed to engage students in informed action that fosters student success and helps fulfill our mission to provide college students opportunities to grow as scholars and leaders.”

After the presentation of their research, Alpha Beta Psi presented the documentary, Two Spirits: Sexuality, Gender, and the Murder of Fred Martinez. “Two Spirits interweaves the tragic story of a mother’s loss of her son with a revealing look at the largely unknown history of a time when the world wasn’t simply divided into male and female and many Native American cultures held places of honor for people of integrated genders.”

The event consisted of a panel of men and women to inform attendees on areas of their expertise. The event consisted of a panel of men and women to inform attendees on areas of their expertise. Panel attendees included: Janice Ivers, Dean of Nursing at NPC; Susan Millerd, LSW; Mike Burdine, RN, a board member of the Arkansas Board of Nursing; Lance Lindow, RN, a board member of the Arkansas Board of Nursing; Minnie Lennox, Director of Human Resources for the City of Hot Springs.

The panel spoke of personal experiences, how they were or were not treated due to their gender, and what if any changes were needed in their fields.
