NPTC Pre-Engineering Classes Practice Oil Spill Containment
National Park Technology Center (NPTC) pre-engineering students participated in an oil spill containment and clean up instant challenge Friday.
Students were given 15 minutes to develop a plan for how to contain and clean up the
oil spill. Each team was provided with a box of materials they could use to develop
a plan including shredded paper, cotton swabs, newspaper, cotton balls, balloons,
rubber bands, popsicle sticks, paper clips, a spoon, a straw, string, plastic wrap,
napkins, a plastic bin, and tape.
After their plan was complete, students were given 15 additional minutes to execute
their plan. They were given points for containing their oil to the smallest area possible
calculated by the square inch and for the estimated amount of oil they were able to
remove.
